2014 Preview: Hasbro's Captain America: Winter Soldier Toy Line

2014 toy coverage continues with more from Marvel Studios' massive Marvel Comics films! ...and as usual, the reveals are somewhat diminished by the figures already hitting the west coast. So far, hardcore toy collectors have found the 6 inch figures at Target stores with 3.75 inch figures following close behind, most likely found in the same regions, though we have not confirmed that. Here's what's to come.

2014 Preview: The Mighty Marvel Universe Marches On

3 and 3 quarter inch action figure fans practically lit candles and donned veils of mourning when it was suggested the 6 inch Marvel Legends action figure line would get a major push for collectors moving forward, while 3 and 3 quarter inch scale would be utilized most often for movie figures targeted for kids...meaning softer sculpts, less articulation and those action features we love so much (read; revile). Soon after, we got the Avengers Assemble action figure series which were pretty much Marvel Universe REBORN...repackaged under the banner of the unstoppable stars of America's favorite super hero film. Genius. As new 3 and 3 quarter figure multi packs were shown at conventions but never made it to retail, fans wondered how dedicated Hasbro would be to this series, now 2 waves in but not very present at the store pegs. Today, we (sort of) get the answer.

Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide: Dolls at Sunset

After years of Barbie ruling the shelves at your local toy shop, it seems there has been a jolt of energy shot into the veins of creatives over the past few years. Set aside lines like Bratz and Liv that only seem to offer endless variation on girl's fashion. We are here to talk about boundless creativity and an eye for design we've never seen at retail before. Most of you already collect Monster High, so no reason to beat that into the ground. Suffice to say we love what Mattel's crew does with the line and are always impressed with the new character designs. Today we'll check out Monster High's sister line Ever After High, the coming of the undead to the girl isles with Once Upon a Zombie and the evolution of My Little Pony with Equestria Girls.

Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide: Skylanders Swap-Force

I am a child of the side scrolling generation. Put me in front of a game where you blast away with infinite firepower against hordes of infinite enemies backed by a nearly unstoppable, colossal boss and I'm happier than a ladygeek watching Tom Hiddleston Loki it up! The Skylanders game series has been offering a similar experience for kids across the planet complete with collectible figures allowing you to transport different characters with unique power sets into any situation, at any time. "Giants" added massive powerhouse characters to that dynamic. Now, a "Swap-Force" addition allows you to mix and match abilities on the fly while beefing up the standard gameplay options and introducing slicker, high definition gameplay. So you've got new characters with magnets at the center, allowing you even more opportunity for greater gameplay, and at times, an additional "lightcore" feature making a little monster glow on its base and you've got something any toy collector would be chomping at the bit to buy. I could have jumped into this game myself, but it isn't meant for me. The Skylanders games play a lot like the LEGO series with little missions to solve, characters who will tell you where to go and squeaky clean adventure for as long as you can stand it, so we brought in my little cousin Lucas, age 5!

Last Minute Stocking Stuffers: Monster 500 For Your Creepy Kids

Each character is sold as a small, 3-inch diecast vehicle. Customers can also collect select large character feature vehicles standing 4 inches high and 5 inches long. The How To Train Your Dragon 2 Trailer

Love the new designs and I'm actually excited to see what they can do with the 3D in the sequel! Remember the book of dragons from the first film? For me, that was a prime example of what SHOULD be done with this technology...not just an excuse to pump up the ticket price.

The thrilling second chapter of the epic How To Train Your Dragon trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years later. While Astrid, Snotlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island's new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

Hellboy Day Is Coming

March 2014 marks the twentieth anniversary of Mike Mignola’s career-defining release of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1. After the character’s somewhat humble beginnings as an eight-page feature in Dark Horse’s San Diego Comic Con Comics special, Seed of Destruction would begin the long life of the beloved “beast of the apocalypse.”

To celebrate, Dark Horse is proclaiming March 22, 2014 as “Hellboy Day,” with events happening in comic shops around the country! Dark Horse is inviting our retail partners to celebrate with us, by offering up exclusive promotional materials, as well as ordering discounts on all Hellboy and BPRD backlist titles.

Additionally, Dark Horse will produce an all-new sampler comic featuring two classic Mignola tales: “The Ghoul” and “Another Day at The Office,” as well as two new stories by Mignola, Fabio Moon, and R. Sikoryak!

NEW Trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Are monkeys still in? I ask because, since the last time I noticed that geeks love monkeys, geeks were not "In" and zombies were quickly looking to overtake the monkeys. Now geeks are in and zombies are on TV pulling massive numbers in ratings, soooo...where does that leave the monkeys? Something to think about.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Sony Gearing Up for Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary

It seems like only yesterday the Sony crew shelled out some cash to clean up the ole Ghostbusters ride and, in whispered tones, an un-named rep told me of their hopes that Ghostbusters 3 would soon be in pre-production. Flash forward to 2013, and we still live in the shadow of that massive Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and the promise that a third film could kick off any day now.

Any day now.

2014 Preview: Hasbro's Amazing Spider-Man 2 Toy Line

We first got a sneak peek at Hasbro's Amazing Spider-Man 2 lineup at Toy Fair 2013 back in February. Over the last couple of months, additional items and full series waves have been popping up for pre-order on retailer websites and in a certain ebay seller out of Hong Kong. Anchorman 2 Reviewed

My Confession: I don't recall much of the first Anchorman film. I remember Sex Panther and Scotch and a battle with a trident and that's about all of it, so comparing the sequel to the original is not happening here.
My Second Confession: At Sunday's Anchorman 2 premiere, I was given free popcorn, a Diet Coke and a bottle of water. It was not a bribe, but it is possible these plush items have compromised my opinion. Full disclosure.

Anchorman 2 begins with Ron and Veronica taking New York news by storm. They've got a seemingly happy life with a wide eyed son and a bright future before them until Veronica gets her dream job and Ron gets the axe...and then belligerent...and then estranged from his wife. He creeps back to San Diego and hits rock bottom, but finds timely salvation in the form of the first 24 hour news network.  Ron takes off across the country to re-assemble the greatest news team ever. As expected..wackiness ensues in flavors including "oh so wrong"and "side-splittingly ridiculous"! Now the team rallies against a common enemy (James Marsden's "Jack Lime") and while devising a way to defeat their foes in glorious news battle, wind up changing the face of Television forever. EPIC!

Best In Geek 2013 - Part 1: Andrew's Picks

Best In Geek 2013-Part 1 By Andrew O’Brien

So I’ve been writing a few articles for Idle Hands over the last couple months, and it occurred to me that you (yes, you again) the reader knows nothing about me. And I mean nothing. All you know is that I went to NYCC, and read some Image and Dark Horse comics once in a while. Personally, I think this is a travesty and you should know a few more things about me, but I’m not just gonna write a personal ad and drone on and on about myself. No, I’m gonna make this fun, and what’s more fun than an END OF THE YEAR AWARDS SHOW! (Well not a show, per se. You get the point.) It’s December, and each year I like to take some time and reflect on the last 12 months in media and pick my favorites. I’ve done this twice before on a podcast I host once in a while, and I thought this would be the best thing to bring to Idle Hands.  The categories are as Follows:

A Teaser Trailer for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar

I couldn't be more excited for a non-Bat Man Christopher Nolan movie if I tried. Say what you will about his handling of your favorite, broody Dark Knight...the man can craft a beautiful, gripping film. We don't know much about Interstellar at the moment beyond it being "based on the scientific theories and script treatment of renowned theoretical physicist, Kip Thorne" (via Interstellar-Movie.com), the title treatment and this new teaser, but that's already enough to make me anxious for more. Hit the jump and check out the teaser trailer!

Judge Dredd Takes On Mega-City Two

This January, duty calls Judge Dredd to the West Coast, in the destructive new miniseries Mega-City Two: City of Courts! After entering a partnership with Rebellion/2000 AD, IDW has explored Dredd’s past in Year One, and taken him “Into the Cursed Earth” in his ongoing title, but with a truly unique creative team on Mega-City Two, Dredd will go up against the unfamiliar and depraved like never before!

Mega-City Two marks the comics-writing debut of Eisner Award-winning journalist and Dredd aficionado Douglas Wolk (Reading Comics). Art chores will be handled by powerhouse Ulises Farinas (TRANSFORMERS: Heart of Darkness, Catalyst Comix), whose precise linework showcases the oddities of Judge Dredd’s world in stunning detail. Rounding out the creative team, colorist Ryan Hill brings the incredible structure in Farinas’ work to life. Mega-City Two will also feature homage variant covers that pay tribute to iconic films, with art by Joe Corroney, NAR!, E.J. Su, and more!

The Official Godzilla Teaser Trailer Arrives

Holeee damn. I can't help my excitement, even though the last time me and my father were this excited was when the previous American Godzilla film hit theaters. Suffice to say...we were not amused as the credits rolled. This time, though....THIS TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT! Legendary doesn't seem to like to make crappy movies. We'll say they are allergic to them. They also seem to love making magnificently epic films. We here are Idle Hands are hoping for epic in scope, ridiculously gargantuan in scale, mind blowing effects, nail biting destruction, a bit of human drama and a whole lot of superb writing. So..yea...our expectations are way low....and we'll ignore that the new poster depicts the military throwing paratroopers at Godzilla...cuz that's just silly.

Threezero's Walking Dead 12 Inch Figures Shambling Forward

THERE WAS SPECULATION! Back in February when we had our annual visit with the fine folks at McFarlane (who later turned off their phones and stopped returning emails), they mentioned they couldn't do 12 inch figures of your favorite zombie apocalypse survivors and the dead head who love to chew on them because SOMEONE else had the license. They ventured a guess of Sideshow...and they were pretty sure they were right. Now, with the pre-order for their first pieces looming, Threezero is done playing it all ninja-like and is flat out showing off their impressive figure line. WARNING: After seeing these, you may want to throw your other toys away!

We are TREMENDOUSLY excited to announce pre-order dates and pricing of AMC's The Walking Dead Pet Zombies!

This license is very important for us and we want for these amazing characters to step out from the screen onto your displays and to your homes!

300: Rise of an Empire Trailer 2

Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.  “300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemisia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Goes Live

We've got trouble. Remember the first Spider-Man movie? Remember how we were very excited to see a modern telling of the Spider-Man myth with great actors and an epic, New York backdrop? Remember your faces when you saw the Power Rangers-esque Green Goblin? Well, it looks like it may be happening again.

I wish I knew what happens in the minds of film makers when they make choices like these. Sure, the mandate for many super hero films has been "make this as real as possible" over the last 10 years or more, even where The X-Men and a world of Mutants was concerned (see boring black motorcycle outfits), but since then, we've had The Avengers. Game changer. A norse god from outer space fighting alongside a technologically astounding armored man, a super soldier from the World War 2 era, 2 super spies and a giant green monster who is nearly indestructible. If we could suspend our disbelief for two hours of that, why be so concerned with what else we'll swallow? We are talking about Marvel Comics properties, with no end of amazing stories to mine and characters who will tear your heart out, mentally...and sometimes physically. How could you go wrong?

The Day of the Doctor has come and gone and most of you hardcore Whovians are still moaning about your feels. ALL YOUR FEELS!! Now Underground Toys celebrates this monumental moment in geek history with an action figure that will give you chills.

The ‘Other Doctor’ is the Doctor’s dark chapter, an unknown incarnation whose existence he has spent centuries repressing, a secret he wants no one to know of. This haunted and battle-worn Other Doctor is finally forgiven after helping find a new solution to end the war, giving the Eleventh Doctor a new purpose as he heads into further adventures.

When the dead fight the dead – where does that leave the living? Marvel is pleased to present your very first look at Empire of the Dead #1 – from zombie godfather and horror visionary George Romero and Eisner Award winning artist Alex Maleev!

Welcome to New York City years after a horrifying plague has swept the nation. The Big Apple is a quarantine zone – but that doesn’t guarantee safety inside! Flesh-eating zombies roam within the remains of Manhattan – and they are not alone. Vampires lurk in the shadows as well, feasting on the living and the undead alike – and no one is safe!

Watch The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug World Premiere LIVE

At this posting, it's 10 minutes til show time and I blame the world of geekery for not alerting me to this sooner. FOR SHAME!! I, myself, am counting the moments til the date when I can sit with friends and watch the film, most definately with the previous film before it. It seems like a lifetime away..but that's how dorky I am for WETA's perfect creations, ie: the Lord of the Rings series and all that take place within that world. Sure, I was a bit underwhelmed with the first instalment, but there were clearly decisions made to make this series a little less intense for little minds to absorb. Over time, I've come to look past the little things, accept that this is NOT Lord of the Rings and just soak up the beauty of every scene. The details will astound you. Nuff said..hit the jump and enjoy..and I'll see you back here on opening day to pick it apart..for this is the way of our people.
